EXCEPTIONAL CASED COLT BREVETTE NAVY REVOLVER OF

CLIPPER SHIP CAPTAIN MOSES RICH COLMAN. Cal. 36. S# 18151. This is a beautiful, well preserved, cased Colt Brevette Navy made in Liege & so proofed. The 5 digit S# no doubt does not represent the amount made. The original walnut casing has Moses Rich Colman initials contemporarily inscribed "M.R.C." on top plaque of case. Also included in the lot is a 1949 published text "CAPTAIN MOSES RICH COLMAN, Letters of a Yankee Clipper Ship Captain". The book is interesting, telling of Capt. Colman's exploits worldwide including his voyages carrying goods including firearms in the time frame this Brevette would have been made in the 1850s. Gun is cased in a partitioned purple velvet compartmentalized mahogany case w/ bag flask, matching serialized brass 2-cavity mold marked "COLT", combination nipple wrench & screwdriver, cleaning rod & Eley cap tin. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: notes stating that this gun belonged to Moses Rich Colman (1807-1872), albumen photo of his home in Scituate, Mass, copy of CDV of Capt. Colman. CONDITION: near excellent overall. Bbl. & cyl. retain 90% plus bright finish. Bbl. marked "COLT / PATENT" on top. Cyl. is etched w/ animals & trees. Well figured grips retain most of their original varnish having light edge wear. Brass trigger guard & backstrap show traces of silver wash, brass overall light mustard patina. Matching S#s throughout. Mechanically excellent w/ crisp bright shiny smooth bore w/ muzzle face notched to emulate rifling. Casing is in matching very good to fine condition. Lining has some light fading & soiling. Flask retains much of its original lacquer & bright fire blued spring. The brass 2 cavity mold is also very good- fine w/ steel sprue cutter retaining much of its original finish. PROVENANCE: Estate of Capt. Moses Rich Colman; David Walsh; Don Bryan collection 1994; estate of western gentleman. (01-19494/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
