This rare painted steel globe was designed by the Denoyer Geppert Company for the US Navy. It was created to be written on with chalk and then wiped clean in order to plan long-range flights and operations. Very few of these globes survive today in both public and private collections. The sphere is approx. 20" in diameter, and the full globe stands nearly 30" tall. The sphere is generally blue, representing the oceans, and land masses are represented by black. There are gradations on the equator from 0 at the Prime Meridian, both East and West to 180. It is on its original 3-claw-footed iron stand with an iron semi-circular bracket complete with the upper and lower round nuts that are generally missing from known examples. CONDITION: the painted finish remains nearly completely intact, with only a few minor losses around the equator. The stand remains solid and supports the globe well. The iron has acquired a pleasing, lightly oxidized patina. (02-23374/BF). $400-800.
