AMERICAN FLAG WITH HANDSTITCHED STARS. 45 1/2" x 29 1/2" Early 13 star flag w/ uniquely arranged stars on the blue canton. Canton measures approx. 17” x 15 1/4" w/ hand sewn, white cotton, double applique stars measuring between 4 1/4" & 3 1/2" from point to point. 1 1/8” Cotton hoist has 5 heavily hand stitched cotton loops approx. every 7” for attachment. Red stripes are single ply, tightly woven wool bunting measuring between 2 1/16” & 2 1/2”. White stripes are a double ply, more loosely woven wool bunting & measure between 2” & 2 1/2”. The hem on the fly end is hand sewn utilizing 2 or 4 layers of fabric. The top & bottom of the flag have selvage edges. Oral history from the consignor states that the flag originated from the Henry Ellis Warren Estate in Ashland, MA. The Warren family has a rich history in the Massachusetts Militia as well as state & federal politics. Among the many famous Warrens in Mass. history, is Joseph Warren who was Henry E. Warren’s third great grandfather. This flag was likely kept around the Warren homestead to honor the service of Captain Joseph Warren in the 6th Middlesex Militia of Massachusetts, otherwise known as Reed’s Regiment. CONDITION: the flag is surprisingly solid & colors remain quite vivid. It shows slight soiling & staining w/ scattered sm. losses & threadbare areas.
