PERCUSSION REVOLVER ENGRAVED TO MAJOR WALTER ANDREW WYNTER OF THE 33RD FOOT. Cal. 54 Bore / approx. 44 cal. S# 22664T. Bbl. 4 3/4". A truly superior example of a 4th Model, 5 shot, 54 bore, single trigger Tranter Patent percussion dbl. action revolver. This revolver is engraved on the top right bbl. flat, "W.A. WYNTER 33RD REGNT". Wynter was commissioned into the 1st Royal Regiment as an ensign in 1865. In 1870, he was transferred to the 33rd Regiment (Duke of Wellington's Regiment) & promoted to sub-lieutenant. 5 Years later in 1875, he was raised to Lieutenant. During his service to the 33rd Foot, he served in Abyssinia participating in the Battle of Magdala from 1867-1868. During the Ashanti Wars from 1873-1874 he saw service during the capture of Odinbiassee. Wynter also served as the Regiment's musketry instructor from 1870-1875. Wynter was awarded the Abyssinia medal & the Ashanti medal w/ Coomassie clasp. From 1878-1880 Major Wynter served w/ the transport department of the Kabul & Kandahar field forces. He was awarded the Afghanistan medal w/ Charasia, Kabul & Kandahar clasps. Wynter also was awarded the coveted Kabul to Kandahar star. Beginning in 1889 Major Wynter is listed in the 5th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regiment, then in 1893, he is listed as an Hon. Colonel. The revolver has an overall blued finish w/ the loading lever, trigger & hammer bright. There are engraved foliate designs on the bbl., frame, trigger guard & buttcap. There is also engraving around the muzzle. Top of the frame is marked "WILKINSON. &. SON. PALL MALL. LONDON.". The S# is on the right side of the frame below the cyl. There is a tiny "HH" stamp on the frame just above the screw of the loading lever. Cyl. has several proof stamps between each nipple. 1 Piece checkered wood grips. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: the original wooden lockable case measures 14 1/2" x 7 3/4" x 2 1/2". There is a brass, reeded edge, round escutcheon plate measuring 1 1/4" in the center of the top. Compartmentalized box is lined w/ original green felt & bears a label reading, "Wilkinson & Son Gun & Sword Manufacturers TO HER MAJESTY, THE WAR DEPARTMENT & THE COUNCIL OF INDIA, and by Special Appointment to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales, No 27, Pall Mall, London.". Case contains a sm. turned fruitwood box containing a spare nipple & several caps, a pewter oiler, a wood & brass cleaning rod, a brass bullet mold marked "TRANTER'S PATENT" on the side w/ iron spur trimmer marked "54" on the top, a pistol flask marked "C&J. W HAWKSLEY" on the charger, an ebony handled nipple wrench, a goat skin pouch w/ several bullets & a key. Also included are several groups of documentation relating to the pistol as well as Major Wynter's service. A copy of the original purchase invoice from Bonham’s auction in 2003 is included. CONDITION: frame & bbl. show about 95% blue. Cyl. is approx. 90% blue. Trigger guard & buttcap show less than 20% remaining. Grip shows the lightest wear w/ no damage. The action is quite crisp & all moving parts function well. Engraving is crisp & sharp throughout. Bore is near excellent w/ strong rifling. Case shows light wear w/ minor scuffs & scrapes.
