EXTRAORDINARY HARTMANN & WEISS BOSS PATTERN SXS
ROUND ACTION SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER GAME GUN WITH CASE & ACCESSORIES ENGRAVED WITH CLASSICALLY INSPIRED LARGE SCROLL BY THE RENOWNED KEITH THOMAS. Cal: 12 Ga. 2-3/4”. S#: 2404. The esteemed firm of Hartmann & Weiss is known for its exacting craftsmanship and attention to classic styling, as well as beautiful finishes on their sporting guns and rifles. All are built in house to proven designs which are generally acknowledged to be the best. (Mostly Boss). Mechanically this gun is a re-creation of a 1930’s era round action Boss self–opening sidelock gun incorporating their superb ejector system and highly regarded single trigger. The 28” chopper lump barrels are engraved “Hartmann & Weiss Hamburg” on the narrow slightly swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with June 2013 German nitro proofs for 2-3/4” chambers. Case hardened and coin finished Boss pattern self-opening sidelock round bodied action features automatic safety (“SAFE” engraved), bushed strikers, platinum line tumbler end cocking indicators and Boss style non-selective single trigger. Action and lockplates are filed in Boss’ most desirable “round” fashion without any high edges on wood or metal. Action is engraved by the highly regarded and often noted Keith Thomas who apprenticed at Holland & Holland in the 60’s and went on his own in 1977. Since then he engraves about five to seven bespoke guns per year for some illustrious clients such as Peter Nelson, A.A. Brown and Hartmann & Weiss. His forte is rose and scroll at which he rivals the superb work done by Jack Sumner a century ago. He cut his teeth at H&H engraving large scroll as is found on this gun. This dramatic scroll with acanthus highlights is well shaded and has good depth. It covers essentially 100% of both action and lockplates. Noted accents include griffin heads on fences and a stunning depiction of a Green Man on bottom of action. This central figure has scrolling acanthus radiating from a central grotesque face with inlaid gold eyes. More scroll as breath emanates from its mouth. Another unique accent is the thumb piece of the top lever which is pierced and relief engraved with the head of a raven which also has gold eyes. Hartmann & Weiss is engraved on each lockplate and engraver’s signature is on trigger plate. Single beaded right hand trigger guard is engraved with matching scroll and S# is in relief on a riband on tang. Straight grip buttstock made of an extraordinary piece of wonderfully marbled and burl figured, flesh toned European walnut measures 14-3/4” over checkered wood butt. Checkering is meticulously cut and of point pattern with mullered borders. A vacant gold oval is on toeline. Matching splinter Boss ejector forend has Anson release. Proof and both wood and metal retain essentially all of their fine factory finishes with only a minor scattering of handling and assembly marks. Bores are bright and shiny, mechanically crisp. Case is also exceptionally fine with only some minor marks. A very rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest firearms to have ever been built. (24-2139//MGM) MODERN. $75,000-125,000.
