EXTREMELY FINE CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION TIFFANY

CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER, CAPT. CHARLES, US COLORED CAVALRY. This beautiful cavalry saber has a 35" nearly mint blade w/ bright frosted panels etched “TIFFANY & CO. N.Y.” on ricasso above Collin’s blade maker stamp. Gold plated hilt has raised relief eagle on quillon, raised relief oakleaf decorated pommel, chased incised design on branches. Knuckle bow is engraved in script “Presented to Capt. Charles W. Dey by Co. “A” U.S.C. Cavalry”. Scabbard has a high relief decorated gilt mounts en suite to hilt design. Charles W. Dey from Medina, NY, entered service September 2, 1861 in the 3rd New York cavalry as a 21 year old private, he was promoted to Cpl. & Sgt., severely wounded March 4, 1863 at Swan Quarter, North Carolina. While recuperating he was commissioned as captain in newly organized Co. A 1st US Colored Cavalry, December 13, 1863 at Camp Hamilton, VA. Unit saw service in the department of Virginia & North Carolina being stationed at Fort Monroe & Williamsburg till May 1864. Now part of Butler’s Army south of the James River, they saw service against Petersburg & Richmond, capture of Bermuda hundred & City Point, Swift Creek, Fort Darling, Drewry’s Bluff, Baylor’s Farm, siege of Petersburg, Deep Bottom, ordered back to Fortress Monroe in August, duty at Newport News & Portsmouth, VA till May 1865. In June, the 1st was sent to Texas for duty in the Rio Grande Valley where they would serve till mustered out February 1866 in Brazos Santiago, TX as was Captain Dey. Regiment lost during service 3 Officers & 48 Enlisted men killed & mortally wounded; & 2 Officers & 177 Enlisted men by disease. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: sm. file of Charles Day service records. CONDITION: very fine to excellent overall, blade retains virtually all its original polish & luster on etched patriotic panels, shark skin grip is complete w/ gilded twisted wire w/ wear at high areas. Hilt & scabbard mounts retain much of their original gold wash w/ balance chocolate brown patina. Steel scabbard body is cleaned bright w/ light staining & pinprick pitting.
