PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY OFFICER’S SWORD & SASH WITH ACCOMPANYING MATERIALS BELONGING TO LIEUTENANT FRANKLIN SPRINGER. Overall length: 43". Blade length: 34 1/2". The single fullered blade is beautifully etched over half its length w/ various patriotic & military motifs including a lg. spread winged eagle & the words, “U S Cavalry” in a central panel. The ricasso is stamped, “W. CLAUBERG (knight) SOLINGEN”. The heavily gilded brass hilt has ornate floral motifs on the top of the handguard. The floral & foliate motifs also appear on the top & underside of both knuckle bow branches as well as the top of the knuckle bow at the pommel joint. The phrygian helmet pommel is ornately embellished throughout w/ a continuation of floral & foliate motifs. The solid silver grip is vertically ribbed w/ leafed vines & raised ridges. The gilded brass mounted, silver plated scabbard is intricately engraved in a similar foliate motif on the throat, drag & both bands. Accompanying the sword is Lt. Springer’s maroon officer’s sash measuring 138" in length that includes 10 1/2" tassels on each end. Also included are five 21st Regiment PA. Cavalry reunion medals for various years. There is a 21st PA Cavalry Reunion ribbon from Gettysburg, PA dated October 7, 1891. There is a discharge document & a furlough paper for Springer when he was a Sergeant. There is a 13 pg. ink document written in 1886 that was mailed to Franklin Springer that details the service of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry also known as the 182nd Pennsylvania Regiment. There are 2 booklets from the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry Association detailing the fifth & tenth reunions. A framed early reproduced photo of Springer is also included. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a wood & glass display case measuring 41 1/4" x 9 1/4" x 9 3/4" is included w/ the sword. There are several reproduced photographs of Lt. Springer in uniform wearing this very sword included. There are also photos of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry Memorial at Gettysburg. There are many pages of information about the 21st PA Cavalry as well as the service of Lt. Springer. The service record of Lt. Springer is also included w/ this comprehensive group. The entire group is accompanied by a notarized letter from Paul Springer detailing the descent of this group in his family directly from Lt. Franklin Springer to himself. CONDITION: the blade has a fine finish w/ frosty etching. There is one sm. noticeable nick in the edge. The hilt retains much of its original gilding & shows no damage. The grips show some tarnish w/ a few minor shallow dings. There is superficial wear to the scabbard. The mounts retain most of their original gilding. The sash shows light overall wear. The ribbons show minor wear w/ 1 being slightly torn on 1 edge. Original papers are a bit stained & discolored but easily legible. The regimental history letter is quite fine & easily legible.
