PHOTOGRAPHS, PAPERS & MAPS PERTAINING TO COL. GEO. P. HAWES JR. WHO SERVED IN THE ROUGH RIDERS & LATER IN THE AEF IN FRANCE. Col Hawes enlisted as a Private in Captain Bucky O'Neill's Company "A" 1st US Vol. Cavalry well known to history as The Rough Riders of Spanish American War fame. Hawes went on to serve in the regular army artillery & served in the 313th field artillery 80th Division in WWI in France. The group consists of a lg. photo album containing official & personal photographs, records, newspaper clippings & artwork which pertains to Col. Hawes service in both The Rough Riders & The 80th Division including handwritten notes & an 80th Division shoulder patch. The photographs, some of which are official aerial reconnaissance prints, are very interesting & detailed. There are 2 display frames measuring approx. 16 1/2" X 12 1/2". 1 Frame contains 3 photos, 1 of then Private Hawes, mounted, likely taken at Tampa. Hawes is holding a machete in his right hand & has a Model 1892 Krag carbine in the scabbard. Unidentified photo of 2 men armed w/ rifles, pistols & machetes. Photo reportedly unpublished, of Col. Theodore Roosevelt. The 2nd frame contains remnants of Col. Hawes official identity card for the AEF. Lg. photo of Col. Hawes at his desk. 80th Division veterans association ID card. Empty envelope marked "private papers" & blue cloth arm band w/ gilt crossed cannons. Also includes 15 stereo views pertaining to The Rough Riders. CONDITION: photo album has expected wear, sm. tears & scuffing commensurate w/ age. Frame photos have edge wear, light staining & fading but all images are clearly visible. Stereo views are buckled w/ edge wear, staining & fading but are mostly legible. (02-15627/RW). $2,600-3,200.
