EXTREMELY RARE COLT 1860 ARMY SEDGLEY CUTAWAY

REVOLVER. Cal. 44. S# 11474. Martially marked Colt revolver altered by the R. F. Sedgley company of Philadelphia. The business started in 1897, was best known for their Springfield 1903 Sporters. Bottom of bbl. lug above S# is marked w/ Sedgley's circle "S" mark. Cutaway alterations consist of a 1 1/8" cutout from left side of barrel, exposing the bore. 7/8" x 1/8" Slot on left barrel lug exposing rack and pinion loading lever operations. Cylinder is cutout exposing one chamber. Entire left recoil shield is milled flush with eight 1/8" cuts to expose the internal working parts. Frame has milled recess below cylinder to expose cylinder stop in both sides. 1" Slots on each side of frame above the triggerguard expose the lock bolt. Top left side of grip is cut away at the frame and backstrap to expose the roller action of the hammer and spring. This martially marked revolver was manufactured in 1862, the 1860 Army was one of the most common handguns used in the Civil War. Barrel is recrowned to 7 7/8" round with German silver blade front sight & New York address. Six shot round rebated cylinder with naval scene roll engraving. Barrel, frame, grip straps, cylinder & wedge have matching numbers. Blue finish w/ case colored frame and brass triggerguard. Action has provisions for shoulder stock attachment. One piece walnut grip with partially visible cartouche on left side. Major parts have "H" inspector's initials. CONDITION: blued parts have faded to smooth light brown patina. Frame retains traces of case colors. Brass triggerguard is bright from past cleaning. Refinished grips show scattered scratches and marks. Functioning action. Bore is dark retaining intact rifling and showing spots of pitting. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Kenneth Horn (Grandson of JC Higgins). (01-20650/DS). ANTIQUE. $6,000-9,000.
