EXTREMELY RARE FACTORY ENGRAVED AND NICKEL PLATED
COLT MODEL 1871-2 OPEN TOP REVOLVER WITH CARVED IVORY GRIPS. Cal. 44 RF. S# 4397. Standard configuration with 7 1/2" barrel having integral rear sight at breech end which is marked "-ADDRESS COL SAMl COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA-". Cartridge ejector is on right side. Percussion style frame has 1871 and 72 patent dates on left side. Caliber marking does not appear on trigger guard. All numbers match including cylinder which is roll engraved with naval scene. Action and barrel are engraved with near full coverage large open shaded scroll in late Navy style as done by Gustaf Young. Ivory 1 piece grips have raised carved eagle head and wings on a shield facing right in a background of stars and arms under "E. PLURIBUS UNUM" on left side. Colt factory letter states revolver was shipped to JP Moore, NYC September 28,1874 as part of 10 gun shipment, not engraved and wood grips. JP Moore must have had engraving & ivories added as they were known. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Colt factory letter will be forthcoming & provided to the buyer. CONDITION: very fine. Metal parts retaining over 80% nickel finish. Most loss is on grip straps and with some bubbling on barrel. Grips are fair to good with mellow aged yellowing and large area of repair with in fill and restoration left side rear extending from top of grip to butt. Bright shiny gain twist bore.
