Early Sharps New Model 1859 ''Straight Breech'' Breech-Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine, having integral Sharps pellet priming system, #36257, .51 cal., 22'' round barrel marked ''New Model (date obscured)'' at breech; faint Sharps marking and 1848 patent date to left side of receiver, ''R.S. Lawrence Pat. / April 12th 1859.'' on lockplate behind hammer, ''C. Sharps' Pat. / Oct. 5th 1852'' to rear of hammer. Oil-finished walnut stocks with iron sling bar and ring affixed to left wrist; iron furniture. Dovetailed twin-blade front sight; adjustable leaf rear sight with the R.S. Lawrence markings in three lines. Carbine appears to be a Model 1859 with 1863 improvements, as the buttstock has no patchbox but the steel buttplate is cut for one. Wood-to-metal fit is excellent, and buttstock appears original. Included is documentation from Wendell Grangaard, President of The Guns of History, Inc., who attributes this rifle to Robert L. Murphy, who enlisted in the 7th Cavalry on Jan. 26, 1872 at the age of 21. Mr. Grangaard states that he has identified the marks on this rifle (''R.M.'', ''I'' and ''C.O'') as those ordered by George A. Custer. Condition is very good, with all metal surfaces having a smooth bluish-brown patina showing scattered light erosion (a bit heavier at muzzle). A rather deep scar runs across the top tang at the rear screw, continuing onto wood. Stocks show age and the scattered scars typical of military use, small losses at rear lockplate tang and rear top tang, but are smooth, solid and show nice coloration. Action is tight and crisp; bore is shiny with distinct rifling and will improve with cleaning. Est.: $2,500-$3,000. (Antique)
