Early U.S. 1818 Contract Cavalry Saber, with metal scabbard, by Nathan Starr, The 1818 contract was for approx. 10,000 sabers and was delivered between 1820 and 1822. This sword has a 34'' curved blade with a clip point. Ricasso area is marked with a ''P'', inspectors mark ''HHP'', and ''N.STARR''. Crossguard has a rounded quillion and ''P''-shaped knuckle guard. Wood grip has seven grooves and is covered in thin leather. Backstrap is steel with a split nut tang retainer. Scabbard is steel with two hanging rings; throat is retained with one central screw. Condition is good for its age, the blade showing age graying, old dark rust patina, some light pitting mainly near the point, and a couple of light edge nicks. There are some signs of light cleaning at some time in the recent past. Guard and backstrap show a dark uncleaned patina. Wood grip is solid with some losses to the leather covering near the top and scuffs. Handle is nice and tight with no play. Original leather blade washer is present. Scabbard has the remnants of a brown painted old finish, with the drag and hanger band showing traces of gold paint. Scabbard shows numerous chips to the paint, rust, and rust pitting overall, but no appreciable dings or dents. Est.: $600-$900.(John Ackerman collection)
