Antique English Flintlock Holster or Indian Trade Pistol, by Ketland & Co., Birmingham, NVSN, .56 cal., 12.25'' barrel without sights has two cannon-turned rings at breech stamped with a large ''W'' (indistinct); flat iron lockplate with a distinct long pointed rear is marked ''Ketland/& Co.'' under flint pan; gracefully shaped hammer and early-style trigger with curved tail; brass furniture including serpentine sideplate, triggerguard with long rear tang, and single retaining thimble for the brass-tipped hardwood ramrod. Varnished European hardwood fullstock with bag-style butt has raised carved aprons on either side of lock and three barrel retaining pins. Mfg'd ca. 1810-25. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration with all original parts; touchhole may have been re-bushed long ago. Condition is very good, the iron surfaces with a deep aged brown patina and heavy pitting at barrel breech and again midway down its length; brass with an aged patina. Stock is smooth and solid, showing the expected marks of use and age, two 3/4'' losses at lower barrel pin and another on left side lock apron, and a likely later coat of varnish. Action is strong and sure; smoothbore is clean showing overall light rust. A nicely proportioned example of this classic arm made for the American and British fur trades, desirable with its long barrel. Est.: $800-$1,200. (Antique)
