Engraved Smith & Wesson .44 Hand Ejector First Model (Triple-Lock) Double Action Revolver, #2268, .44 S&W Spec. cal., 7.5" pinned barrel, blue finish, pearl grips; right grip with a carved steers head that is adorned with several small clear gemstones at the eyes, ears, and across the forehead. This revolver also features a round blade front and standard notched rear sights, color case hardened hammer and smooth trigger. Nicely accomplished non-factory engraving covers approx. 70% of the metal surfaces. Engraving includes scroll and floral motifs set against a punch-dot background. Work is not signed. Frame and yoke with matching assembly numbers (4011). Barrel, cylinder, yoke lock and extractor are numbered to the gun. Shipped to Schoverling Dale & Gale Co., New York City, NY, Nov. 18, 1908, with factory letter signed by S&W Historian Roy G. Jinks. Letter verifies barrel length, finish, and the original grips are listed as checkered walnut. Condition is very good overall retaining approx. 90% low luster finish. Wear at the muzzle, lower portion of the frame/trigger guard, and front strap accounts for much of the finish loss. Factory lettering is clear, and engraving is crisp. There are intermittent tiny pin prick blemishes present on parts of the metal, as well as a few small mars to the left side of the front sight blade. Only trace amounts of case coloring remain, and there is very mild pitting visible on the sides of the trigger. Both grips show moderate yellowing and have a nice, aged appearance. Left grip fits just a little small with a small chip at the heel, and a vacant spot at the upper edge that likely held some sort of decorative medallion. Right grip fits better, carving is defined, with a tiny chip at the toe and a little larger chip missing from the heel, as well as a small age crack in between the steer's mouth and grip edge. Action cycles smoothly and locks up securely. Bore shows moderate wear, is clean, lands and grooves are clearly defined, but there are a few small spots of erosion approx. 2" down from the muzzle. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (C&R/PPT)
