Exquisite Johan Andreas Kuchenreuter Flintlock Pistol
Made in Regensburg, Germany by Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter circa 1750, of the Kuchenreuter Family of Gunsmiths who made firearms for Napoleon, Tsar of Russia and Kings and Princes of Bavaria. Comparable guns are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This fine pistol has an overall measurement of 10-1/4" with a 6-1/4" three-faceted smoothbore barrel turning to round in 45 caliber with counterbored muzzle for ease of loading. The Barrel has floral acid etched engraving with faded silver wash filing and is signed "JOH AND KUCHENREUTER" with gold "Knight on Horse" breech inlay and gold damascene breech bands. The pistol is fitted with a silver blade front sight and a two-leaf fold-down notch rear sight. Highly polished chiseled game scene engraved flintlock with single set trigger control and ornate gold Ormolu chisel engraved with "Dog Resting" side plate. Pistol was part of a pair with tang having "2" behind the rear sight. Ornate wood stock with floral raised carving around tang. Fluer-De-Lis raised carved chevrons behind locks with raised floral borders along forestock, tailpipe, and trigger guard. Grip has gold washed "Man Holding Drawn Bow" chisel engraved thumbpiece (possible Family Crest) with game scene engraved or pressed gold Ormolu buttcap. Full gold Ormolu trigger guard with extended grip tang and game and floral scene engraving. Gold Ormolu floral deep chisel engraved tailpipe and ferrel with horn nosecap and horn tipped hardwood original ramrod. CALIBER: 45. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Pistol is in Museum quality condition with minor tarnishing and handling marks. Great bore with ultra crisp mechanics. A work of Gunsmithing Art in Museum Quality condition.
