Extremely RARE Sharps Model 1874 Schuetzen Rifle 40-50 Single Shot Rifle
This rifle was one of 65 made for the New York Central Schuetzen Corps of New York City between 1877 and 1878, according to Sharps Firearms book. Originally designed and conceived by Charles Overbaugh who at the time was a Sharp's salesman, Overbaugh then pitched the idea to Christen F. Gennerich of the New York Central Schuetzen Corps who then through Overbaugh preceded to order roughly 65 in all with this one listed in Sharps Book Volume III by Roy Marcot, Ron Paxton and Edward Marron Jr. on the order dated February 13th, 1878 (listed on page 112 Sharps Book Volume III). Rifles were built with a specific request from Gemmerich which included a 30" lightweight blued octagon barrel. Barrel measures 1" across flats at muzzle. Barrel is unmarked with sporting Globe front sight, no rear sight and a mid-range tang Vernier sight. Case-hardened 1874 action with double set trigger control. Plain walnut pistol grip stock with cheekpiece. Stock is fitted with nickel plated Schuetzen butt plate with hard rubber grip cap. Matching plain walnut Schnabel forearm with mark from add on clamp type palm rest. Comes with factory letter confirming all options. Provenance: Michael Rector Collection CALIBER: 40-50 1-11/16. CONDITION
Retains 95% original blue with light edge wear, blue starting to fade to a plum. 70% case colors with most in protected areas. 90% original varnish with light handling marks. Forearm has small 1" crack on right side near tip. Excellent bore and mechanics. A super rare rifle not available for sale often!
