FANTASTIC EARLY WAR CONFEDERATE DOUBLE BREASTED

REGULATION FROCK COAT, LT. CHARLES FRY, ORANGE COUNTY VIRGINIA ARTILLERY. You can not find a better condition Confederate frock, especially with such good history. Les Jensen wrote detailed report of authenticity and history and concluded: This is fine example of a rather early frock for 1st lieutenant of artillery, made in 1862….Captain Fry’s impressive record as battery commander, particularly in battles of Gettysburg and Spotsylvania adds great deal to background of this coat. “Tailoring is well done, yet the piece exemplifies the conservatism in taste one would expect in a Virginia piece…It is a highly important and rare survivor of one of the better battery commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia.” This uniform when originally bought from family also had Fry’s cap which was sold to Greensboro Historical Society where it remains today. The accompanying sash is not mentioned in documentation other than bill of sale with the Virginia belt in next lot. The well-made crimson sash is 80” long with 12” tassels and displays well on coat. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: research, Les Jensen report, bio, copies of service records. CONDITION: fine, detailed report with multiple photos accompanies sash is equally fine. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. COLLECTION HISTORY: Willard Smith 1974 / Bill Turner 1985 / Gary Hendershott / Andrew Pells collection / Cullen Smith collection 2017.
