CORNELIUS J. KRAISSL. Dr. Kraissl was born in 1902 and eventually became a renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon from New Jersey. However, during his military career he was a flight surgeon during WWII and served with the Flying Tigers in the CBI theater, being awarded the Bronze Star as a major. He served with the New York Air National Guard during the Korean Conflict and subsequently retired from military service as a brigadier general. This lot contains hundreds of pages written by and to General Kraissl, including military orders, inspection reports, vaccination reports, and scores of other documents. Easily, the largest item in the lot is a huge, rolled-up khaki canvas piece of field equipment, stenciled "US BEDDING ROLL MOD 1939". There are copies of the Flying Tigers Association magazine, dated 1979 and 1982. A large number of photographs are included, mostly of aircraft of varying types, including an interesting shot of a large propeller-driven plane with "BYRD ANTARCTIC EXPIDITION" written on the side. Also included in this historically significant lot is a dewat hand grenade, a WWI overseas cap, a small canvas duffle-type bag, a small group of military insignia including a small pair of pilot wings, a deck of 50 "ARMORED VEHICLE RECOGNITION" cards, and a large US military compass in a russet leather holder for the belt. CONDITION: Most papers have yellowed with age but remain clear, undamaged, and easily read. Photographs generally remain sharp, but some do have roughness to the edge. Other items generally show light wear. (02-23671/BF). $300-500.
