. Overall length: 34". Blade length: 28 1/4". Blade has a single wide fuller & is decorated w/ gilt highlighted etching on a blued field over 1/2 its length. Decorative etching includes a lg. "U S OF A", an American flag on a pole, a spray of arms & various foliate motifs. A ribbon near the ricasso reads, "B & J. Cooper . N York". The Coopers worked in New York City from about 1804-1819, when their business & inventory was purchased by R.H. Potts. Gilded brass hilt w/ decorative cut out guard & fluted knuckle bow. There is a lanyard ring where the knuckle bow enters the well articulated eagle head pommel. Plain backstrap. Crosshatched carved certifiably antique ivory grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard w/ lg. 6 1/2" drag. Throat & drag do not stylistically match. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray mottled patina w/ 75% of the blued field intact & most of the gilt highlighting remaining. There is some oxidation concentrated near the ricasso. Hilt is a bit loose & slightly misshaped. Approx. 40% of original gilding remains. Grip is nearly completely intact w/ only a minor chip near the pommel. Scabbard body is crazed but remains intact. Throat has a deep mustard patina w/ a frog stud. The drag retains most of its original gilding. (02-17524/BF). $1,400-2,000.
