FINE CASED PAIR OF WESTLEY RICHARDS HAND

DETACHABLE EJECTOR GAME GUNS. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 5/8". S# 18566 & 18567 (ca. 1936). The 28" dovetailed bbls. are engraved "Westley Richards" "23 Conduit St." "London" "Gunmakers by appointment to H.M. The King" on game ribs. Rear portions of ribs are gold inlaid with numbers "1" and "2" which matches numbers on top levers and forend latches denoting a pair. Bbl. flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with "Special Steel" information and serial numbers. Casehardened double Ogee backed actions with hand detachable "A & D" locks feature automatic safeties ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), patented third fasteners and double triggers. Engine turned locks have thumb spurs on hammers and locks are gold inlaid for R & L and gun numbers "1" and "2" on tops. Actions have patent use numbers "3916" and "3917" marked on watertables. Locks are housed under hinged floorplates. Actions are engraved with near full coverage well cut lightly shaded scroll, "WESTLEY RICHARDS" is on scrolled banner on sides of each action. Fences are engraved with larger and more deeply cut scroll. Tops of actions are engraved "WESTLEY RICHARDS" "EJECTOR". Blued top levers, floorplates and trigger guards are engraved with matching scroll. Trigger guard has scene of two feeding pheasant on bow of gun #1 and pointer on gun #2. Serial numbers are on tangs. Very well matched, figured and streaked European walnut, straight grip buttstocks measure 14" over checkered wood butts. Point pattern checkering with mullered borders is at grips and large gold ovals engraved with rampant lions holding flower blossoms (?) over the motto "Vulneror Non Vincor" (I am wounded not defeated) are on toe lines. Matching splinter Deeley ejector forends with inlet horn tips have Deeley releases.

CAST: approx. 5/8" off. LOP: 14". WEIGHT: 6 lbs. 8 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: guns are housed in what appears to be their original oak and leather 2 gun case with brass corners. A rectangular leather label on top is black embossed "G. DE JAGER". Interior is lined in dark green cloth, and a paper Westley Richards label is in lid. Bottom compartment contains a 2 piece ebony and German silver cleaning rod w/ brush, 3 Holland & Holland marked horn body snap caps and another unmarked, 2 square oil bottles (1 marked Westley Richards on top). A covered compartment holds black Morocco leather wallet with old jag and brush. CONDITION: very fine, as partially refinished. Bbls. retaining nearly all of a best reblack with some scattered light marks and scratches. Rib engraving is very light. Actions retain 40-50% original casehardening color, quite strong where protected. Top levers, floorplates and trigger guards are reblued and retain essentially all of that blue. Stocks retain nearly all of a light oil refinish with some scratches and marks. Checkering is worn and dirty and has not been recut. Bores are bright and shiny with no visible problems except for some very light frosting or leading at breech ends. Actions are tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is still relatively light in color and has a fair number of marks, rubs and lifting of grain from tape removal. Old straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is very good to fine with light soiling and compressions. Label is considerably foxed, has some rubs through and cracks. Interior partitions have some relining but are generally good. Accessories are good. A fine pair of great handling "Golden Age" Westleys that measure well. A comparable pair of new guns will cost over $100,000.(22-1192 & 22-1193/MGM). BOTH CURIO. $15,000-30,000.
