FINE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA FLINTLOCK MUSKET
BY MELCHIOR BAKER. Cal. 72. NSN. Resembling the French model 1863 Charleville pattern musket, this gun has a 44" bbl. secured by 3 bands. A bayonet lug is 1" back from muzzle at top. Breech section is stamped w/ liberty cap over "P" (pre 1799) proof. Lock w/ flat beveled plate has small teat finial & integral pan. The large letters "CP" (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania) are stamped at rear, no maker's name is present. Interior of lock is stamped "MB" (Melchior Baker of Fayette county who had a contract for the production of 2,000 muskets). Beveled cock is reinforced, frizzen is bridled & featherspring has spear shaped finial. American walnut stock w/ deeply fluted comb is mounted w/ 1798 contract type iron furniture which is unmarked. Wood is also unmarked w/ the exception of a lightly incised double "V" or "W" on right side of comb. CONDITION: good. Metal parts are mostly brown patina w/ silver highlights, lightly pitted overall w/ some deep pits around touch hole which has not been bushed. Lock is still in excellent condition & not reconverted. Stock retains nearly all of what is most likely an old oil refinish. There are a number of cracks along bbl. channel, minor on left side, but w/ 10" separation on right. Button head ramrod appears to be original. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19074/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-3,500.
