FINE CONDITION MODEL 1819 HALL BREECH LOADING

FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 52 w/ 16-groove rifling. NSN. The 1st US adopted breech loading rifle & also the 1st arm to have interchangeable parts. A total of just under 20,000 were made 1819-1840. This fine condition example has browned rnd. 32 3/4" bbl. w/ muzzle counter bored approx. 1 1/2" & secured by 3 pin retained iron bands. Breechblock, w/ boxlock type flint cock & frizzen, tips up for loading & is held in place while down by a catch protruding from the bottom in front of trigger guard. The breechblock on this specimen, which is still in original flint configuration, is marked “J. H. HALL", "H. FERRY", & "U.S. 1839”. One piece walnut stock is iron mounted. Furniture is browned. Lg. trigger guard has long curve at rear serving as pistol grip. Stock appears to be unmarked except for the initial (possibly “Y”) behind trigger guard tang. CONDITION: exceptionally fine "as found". Bbl., bands & action retaining over 90% original brown w/ some sharp edge wear & a few scattered marks/scratches. Breech block, frizzen & cock retain nearly all of their case hardened dark gray, also w/ some light scratches. Trigger guard retains over 90% original brown w/ some silvering on top of spur & bow. Buttplate retains perhaps half its original brown. Stock is also very fine w/ nearly all of its oil finish w/ some marks & dings, most notably 2 deep marks on left side behind grip & a sm. chip on left side panel behind action. Original ramrod/cleaning rod retains most of its bright polish. Bright shiny bore rifle appears unfired. A truly exceptional example of this interesting rifle in superb condition, just a little dusty. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20535/MGM). ANTIQUE. $4,500-6,500.
