FINE EARLY GERMAN HIRSHFANGER MIT

STEINSCHLOSSPISTOLE OR HUNTING SWORD PISTOL. Overall length: 27 1/2". Blade length: 22". Pistol length: 4 1/2". Bbl. length: 1 3/4". This fine weapon features a hunting sword w/ a wide fuller beneath a narrow fuller on a plain straight blade. Brass hilt w/ turned down guard decorated w/ an allegorical scene. The crossguard, quillon, knuckle bow & pommel cap are all decorated w/ similar allegorical scenes. The grip appears to be covered in shark or ray skin. No scabbard. The pistol has a short cannon like bbl. & a receiver that is marked, “SCHIRMER IN BAMBERG”. The side of the receiver has an artfully engraved boar. Wolfgang Schirmer worked & produced exceptional arms in Bamberg, Germany. He was born in 1704 & died in 1772. The hunting sword pistol likely dates from around 1750-1760. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray, cleaned finish. The brass shows significant wear but no damage. The grip is intact & shows wear commensurate w/ its age. The pistol shares a medium gray cleaned finish w/ the sword blade. There are no significant notable faults w/ the mechanism & the lock holds cock easily. Very good bore. (01-20298/BF). $1,200-2,000.
