George Daw has association with Confederate imports as several of his rifles came through the blockade and checkered volunteer rifles with known Confederate markings are well known. Iron mounted British Pattern 1856 Rifle, 33” barrel engraved “GEORGE H. DAW 57 THREADNEEDLE ST LONDON”, turned at muzzle for bayonet, standard Enfield long range sight, standard 3 groove military rifling, the lock marked “G. H. DAW”. Unlike standard military issue arms, this rifle has fine checkered wrist and forestock, vacant silver thumb plate, lighter weight tapered ovate barrel, and brass tipped ramrod. Since volunteers bought their own rifles, some could afford best quality and quality maker like Daw made them. CONDITION: fine overall, muted case color on lock, barrel has traces of blue with balance plum, stock has crisp checkering, complete and original with sling swivels long removed.
