FINE ICONIC & VERY RARE DUFILHO CONFEDERATE STAFF

OFFICER’S SWORD WITH “PELICAN FEEDING YOUNG”. 30.5” Unstopped fullered blade, maker marked stamped “DUFILHO / NEW ORLEANS”. This is among the most beautiful of all Confederate officer swords. Large guard with relief cast Louisiana State Seal (Pelican feeding young) in laurel wreath and large “CS”. This sword is a fine “attic condition” survivor with original scabbard with scalloped mounts and rococo decorated ring bands. Alexandre H. Dufilho was prewar cutler making surgical instruments and bowie knives. He continued his trade postwar up to 1867 still listed as cutler at his wartime address 21 Royal Street, no doubt among best Confederate sword makers. CONDITION: very good-fine overall, blade has smooth brown color, remnants of old sharpening, crisp maker mark. Hilt, pommel, and scabbard have strong areas of gold wash with balance chocolate/brown patina. Scabbard is complete and original with a small glued repair to leather between top mounts. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17236/JS). $40,000-45,000.
