GRIFFIN & HOWE MAUSER SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1714 (1941). Bbl. 24". Griffin & Howe is famous for making fine sporting rifles since 1923 & to date has produced upwards of 2,500. Most of the early sporters were built on Springfield actions w/ Mauser actions usually being special ordered or for Magnum calibers. Griffin & Howe Mauser action rifles usually command a premium. This “as found” example has 24" medium weight bbl. engraved “No. 1714 Griffin & Howe Inc. New York” on top. Bbl. is fitted w/ banded on sling eye & stippled front ramp Holding Gold Bead. Model 98 Mauser action was most likely sourced from a WWI Doughboy bring back. It has receiver ring stippled & Lyman 48 receiver sight fitted. All serial numbers & other identifying marks have been eradicated from action during production. Bolt has had handle lowered w/ rnd. knob checkered in 2 panels. Flag safety engraved “Safe” & “Fire”. Bolt body, extractor, action run ways & cartridge follower are damascened or engine turned. Two stage trigger is retained, finger blade checkered. Bottom metal does not have lock screw holes. Trigger guard bow is nicely shaped. Front portion of floorplate has lunate checkered panel. Classically styled stock, appears to be of dense American walnut & measures 13 1/2" over checkered steel M-70 type buttplate. Swept right hand cheekpiece has shadow line which extends to point of comb. Stock also features usual horn forend tip, steel grip cap, sling eye on toeline along w/ silver oval engraved “A.W.C.”. Checkering is of classic Griffin & Howe, exceptionally well cut, point pattern w/ mullered borders. Checkering of forend wraps completely around stock. Rifle is equipped w/ old, most likely original, 1" leather sling in M-70 super grade type swivels. CONDITION: very fine overall; appears to be all original “as found”. Metal parts retaining over 95% original blue w/ some scattered light marks & some pin prick freckling which is most noticeable on bolt stop & front portion of bottom metal. Bolt & action retain nearly all of their damascening, stock retains well over 90% original oil finish w/ a few minor marks mostly on right side of butt & w/ a few nicks along edge of cheekpiece. Bore is excellent, bright sharp & shiny. Mechanically fine. An attractive, classic G&H. (20-4349/MGM). CURIO. $2,500-3,500.
