AUTO MILITARY RIFLE. Cal.30-06. S# B5235. Approximately 720 of the 21,400 Dutch contract Johnson rifles were procured for the US Marine Corps. The rifle was used to arm the short lived Para-Marines early in World War II. The quickly removed barrels made the rifles especially desirable for parachute troops. Bbl. 21 7/8" Marked over chamber "J.A. 30-06". Marked underneath chamber "J " and "encircled sword " and "OI" the Dutch proof mark. The serial numbers rarely match on Johnson rifles as this was not done at the factory. Receiver is Marked on top "JOHNSON AUTOMATICS" "MODEL OF 1941" MADE IN PROVIDENCE R.I., U.S.A." "CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO" and patent info. Marked on right rear of receiver with "star" over inverted triangle around "CRANSTON ARMS CO." this is the Dutch acceptance mark. Aperture rear sight graduated to 1000 meters. Blade front sight with protective ears. Walnut stock set. Early non laminated style. Fine checkered buttplate. US issue tan leather Model 1907 sling. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original unmarked 7 1/2" triangular blade bayonet and brown leather scabbard. Bayonet retains most of its Parkerized finish. Scabbard has light wear and staining but stitching remains tight. CONDITION: stock set has a very good appearance with only light wear and handling marks. Metal retains most of its original dark Parkerized finish with very light wear. Very good shiny bore with sharp lands. PROVENANCE: from the collection of Mark Ivey Godfrey. (24-5262/RW).
