RIFLE BY H. L. RASCH. Cal. 530. Four groove rifling. NSN. The 35 1/4" swamped octagon twist bbl. is mounted w/ 1 standing U-notch rear & thin steel blade front (in eared protector) sights. Patent breech is nicely scroll engraved & has griffen head on side. Breech iron also w/ fine semi relief scroll has diopter tang sight installed. Backspring lock w/ flat faced percussion hammer having stylized dolphin head is also fitted w/ pivoting safety device at front which holds hammer away from nipple. Lockplate & hammer are engraved w/ scroll matching breech iron which surrounds gold inlaid scene of a hound chasing a stag. Maker's name & address "H. L. RASCH, BRAUNSCHWEIG" are engraved around pivot of hammer. Rifle is fitted w/ dbl. set triggers. Lightly fiddle figured European walnut full length stock is tipped w/ horn & attaches to bbl. w/ 2 sidebolts through rectangular German silver escutcheons. Stock is iron mounted w/ fancy trigger guard having finger spur & scroll at tail forming pistol grip. Bottom of trigger guard bow is scroll engraved w/ scene of gold inlaid eagle(?) flying over mountain top. A sling loop is at front of trigger guard bow matching bail type loop halfway down stock. Buttplate has 2" tang engraved to match lock. Right side of stock is fitted w/ rectangular patchbox that is scroll engraved, and gold inlaid w/ scene of hound & wild boar. Stock also features swept deep right hand cheekpiece & flat top point pattern checkering at grip. An old hickory ramrod is held by 2 nicely shaped and beaded pipes w/ matching thimble. CONDITION: fair to good. Metal parts cleaned to dark gray w/ silver highlights over considerable amount of light pitting. There are vicemarks on left flat of bbl. at rear. Patchbox cover is considerably rusted. Stock w/ old oil finish has a number of subsequent marks, details are rounded, wood is slightly below metal. Bore is very good, shiny, somewhat pitted toward muzzle. Lock & triggers are good. This unusual rifle by a highly regarded maker would most likely make a great shooter. (01-20597/MGM).
