FINE QUALITY PAIR OF PERCUSSION DUELING PISTOLS

BY LIZERAY OF PARIS WITH ACCESSORIES. Cal. 47 (multi groove rifled bbls.). NSN. The gunmaker Lizeray is not listed in "Heer" but he was obviously very skilled as the quality of these pistols matches some of Paris' best. They have 10" swamped octagon bbls. gold inlaid "LIZERAY BTE 17 BOULEVART DES ITALIENS a Paris" on top flats which is also gold inlaid "1" and "2". Gold bands are around muzzles and breech ends. Patent breeches are nicely filed, and breech irons are fitted with rear sights. Both breeches and irons are engraved with cleanly cut partially shaded scroll. Island, front spring, percussion locks with rebated tails are fitted with well filed tall serpentine hammers. Locks are engraved with more unusual scroll similar to that found on breech iron. Maker's name and address is under each hammer. Iron trigger guards have finger spurs. Half stocks of ebony have fluted and raised carved grips with engraved steel caps. Raised carving is very well done and is of scrolling acanthus pattern. Tips of forends are carved in a similar manner. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: guns are housed in their original ebony veneered case. A flush brass medallion on top is nicely engraved with two cavemen flanking family crest of boar's head on shield surmounted by a crowned knight's helm with another man with club above, all over the motto "NVNQVAL" "SAVCIVS" "IMPUNE". Interior is lined in faded red velvet. Inside of lid is gold embossed "Lizeray" "A Paris". Bottom compartment is French fitted for guns and a large array of original accessories including steel round ball mold, ebony loading hammer, file decorated powder measure, ebony handled nipple wrench, two ebony and German silver loading/cleaning rods, and two empty ebony containers. There are two covered compartments with horn knobs. CONDITION: very good. Bbls. retaining about half of their original blue, most loss due to flaking and some cleaning especially on gun #1. Locks and furniture retain most of their French gray with some minor discoloration. Stocks retain most of their original surfaces with some scattered handling marks. Bores are good with some light pitting. Mechanically good. Exterior of case has a large number of scratches in its original finish. Over half of the brass banding on lid is missing, some is lifted. Interior cloth is good to fine with some bleaching from cleaning fluids in lid along with some light soiling and compressions from accessories. Accessories are generally good to fine, metal showing some cleaning. PROVENANCE: By descent, from the Albert Boardman II of Rye, N.Y. (01-20808/MGM). ANTIQUE. $5,000-8,000.
