FINE US SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1795 EARLY TYPE III

MUSKET. Cal. 69. NSN. Bbl. 44 3/4" w/ bayonet stud 1 1/4" from muzzle is held by 3 spring retained iron bands. Breech end of bbl. is stamped “US” & has “P”, eagle head & “V” proofs. Tops of rear 2 bands are flattened. Lock w/ beveled plate & short teat features correct chamfered cock w/ straight spur, integral rounded pan, bridled friction frizzen w/ straight toe & feather spring w/ spear finial. Lock is marked “US”, eagle & “SPRINGFIELD” in front of cock w/ date “1809” horizontally on tail. Walnut stock w/ fluted comb is iron mounted & has undated buttplate. Triggerguard has Type III rounded finials & screw attached sling loop. A button head ramrod is present. Stock has “US” marking on left side panel & the initials “RL” are lightly punch dot struck on left side of comb. CONDITION: fine, complete & original. Iron parts w/ dark brown untouched patina overall. Wood w/ hand worn highlights to an old coating of oil w/ scattered minor marks. There is a sm. loss of wood on left side behind rear cock. Bbl. channel is fine w/ no noted cracks or losses. Rusted bore. Lock operable. A very fine example of this important American musket. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor.
