BLUNDERBUSS BARREL. PISTOL WITH SPRING BAYONET. Cal. diameter at muzzle 1.06". NSN. Bbl. 7". John Waters of Birmingham was granted a patent for "pistols w/ a bayonet" in 1781. This is one of those iconic pistols & has 1 piece cast brass blunderbuss cannon form bbl. w/ boxlock pistol frame. Left side of frame engraved "Patent" "No 851" "Waters & Co." is on right side. Bottom of bbl. fitted w/ 7" folding triangular bayonet w/ spring housing & catch at front of bbl. Bayonet is retained in folded position by a secondary trigger at rear of trigger guard. A baleen ramrod w/ brass head & steel worm tail is retained by soldered on rib w/ 1 beaded pipe & matching thimble. Reinforced cock is of iron. Steel frizzen has external spring. A sliding safety is on top tang which engages at half cock. Plain chamfered grip is of walnut. CONDITION: good to fine. Brass once cleaned has toned to a mustard yellow & has a scattering of dings & marks. Iron parts cleaned to silver gray. Stock has most of its original finish. Mechanically good.
