Cal. 16 Ga. S# 60919. Bbl. 29 1/2" w/ solid rib, fixed Full choke & steel mid bead. The Grade IV gun w/ finely polished blued surfaces having extensive gold inlaid engraving on sides, top, bottom, tangs, trigger guard of receiver & breech end of bbl. This floral pattern engraving consists of flowers & leaves as well as scroll swirls & straight lines. The book by Matt Eastman states that a Browning catalog of the era gives the following description "This model represents an unsurpassed example of European gunsmithing, which has been developed to a fine art. The ornamentation is a delicate design, inlaid by hand in green and yellow gold. The product of exclusive jewelers is not wrought with more exquisite skill than is this magnificent sporting arm." Original chambering was 2 9/16", the action has been modified to accept modern 2 3/4" shells. The safety is located in front of trigger guard. The rnd. knob stock is fashioned of exhibition quality European walnut w/ tear drop points on ears & 24 LPI hand checkering. LOP: 14" over an aftermarket ventilated pad & reattached 7/16" portion of the original wood. Forearm is a standard Grade I Browning replacement. S# indicates 1927 mfg., retail price in that era was $277. WEIGHT: 7 lbs. 15 oz. CONDITION: bbl. & action retain 75% lightly worn original blue showing edge & carry area wear. Gold is missing at least 38 sm. segments of inlay. Stock shows some age darkening w/ worn finish over numerous scratches, dents & handling marks having sm. cracks around actions & tangs. Checkering is worn. Forearm has lightly worn finish & checkering showing scattered sm. handling marks & hairline crack extending from action. Bore is clean & bright. (19-5619/DS). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
