WAGON WHEEL LINE OFFICER'S HANGER. Overall length: 32 1/2". Blade length: 26 1/2". A single fullered curved blade of typical early American quality. The brass hilt is in wagon wheel form having 6 spokes at the base w/ an arrowhead shaped quillon. Rising towards the pommel is a 3 branch knuckle bow joining into a single branch. A well formed egg shaped pommel has raised decoration at both the top & bottom. There is a sm. ferrule both above & below the smooth wooden grip. No scabbard. Research has suggested that these swords could have been made by Richard Manning, 1701-1774 of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Manning was a clock maker known to have produced brass gears w/ the same 6 spoke design. Manning served as the Artificer of the Ipswich Regiment during the French & Indian Wars & is also known to have made swords for the militia of Andover, MA. CONDITION: blade has a lightly mottled medium to dark gray patina w/ scattered very shallow nicks to the edge. The brass hilt, pommel & ferrules have a lovely deep mellow mustard patina. The wooden grip has a single tight, nearly full length age crack from drying. (02-14917/BF). $4,000-6,000.
