Fantastic Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter Flintlock Pistol
Made by Johann Andreas Kuchereuter in Regensburg, Germany circa 1750. Johann was a member of the famous Kuchenreuter Gunsmith Family who made guns for European royalty and whose surviving examples are in major museums throughout the world including similar examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The pistol features a 10-1/2" three faceted barrel morphing into round with a flat sighting plane in 45 caliber smoothbore with countersunk muzzle for ease of loading. The barrel is floral etched with silver wash filling with maker name "JOH AND KUCHENREUTER". Breech has square recessed area with gold "Knight on Horse" and gold damascene barrel bands. Pistol has silver blade front sight and two leaf fold down rear sight. High polish chisel engraved flintlock with Deity and dog scene with floral engraved frizzen and cock. Lock is held with gold washed raised floral and dog scene two bolt sideplate and controlled by a single set trigger. European possibly fruitwood stock with raised carved scroll design around tang and tailpipe. Grip has raised floral and resting deer scene gold Ormolu thumbpiece surrounded by scroll bone or ivory inletting. Butt has gold washed extended cap with raised floral and Hunter scene. Gold Ormolu square back with extended grip tang with trigger guard bow having raised "Hirsch" and floral design. Floral raised pattern tailpipe and ferrels with horn tipped hardwood rod and horn nosecap. Beautiful piece of Gunsmith Art in great condition. CALIBER: 45. FFL STATUS: Antique.
CONDITION
Museum quality condition with gold wash and barrel finish fading slightly to a silvery patina. Gold washed furniture has some tarnishing and some light freckling. Wood has sharp carving with no visible repairs and some slight shrinkage. Good bore with crisp mechanics. Gun appears to have been fired very little. A Great Gun!
