Depicting modern nudes at spa by Enrico Baj 142/250, signed lower right corner. Image measures 28"x26" with single mat and black wood frame. Enrico Baj was the founder with Sergio Dangelo of the "Nuclear Art Movement" in Milan in 1951 and founder with Asger Jorn of an international movement for an imaginary Bauhaus in Albissola, Italy in 1953. In 1954 he was a contributor to numerous avant-garde magazines. Baj did his first collages and assemblages in Milan in 1956. He was associated with the Nouveau Realiste group in Milan. He traveled to New York, associating with Duchamp in 1962, Andre Breton in Paris in 1963, and Max Ernst in Paris from 1963 from 1966. His works are overflowing with highly stylized nude figures and animals - lions, camels, horses, goats - encrusted with a gaudy array of sequins, watch faces, military patches and braids, many of which Baj bought in bulk on his last trip to New York. These paintings turn their back on all notions of decorum and good taste, but that's something Baj has been doing for most of his career. But for all its vulgarity and kitsch, his work has a very serious theme: the population explosion. He further concentrated on multiple and editioned works of art in Milan, 1966.
