Fine Presentation Quality British 1836 Pattern Brunswick Percussion Rifle, NSNV, .654'' cal., 29-1/2'' browned twist steel octagonal barrel with maker's name ''I. EGAN. ARMORER, 2ND. RIFLES.'' engraved on top barrel flat with early Birmingham proofs on lower barrel flat; polished in-the-white back action lock has light vine scroll engraving with ''I. EGAN'' on narrow portion of lockplate, followed by a small British broad arrow; hammer has a half-cock notch and trigger is pin adjustable within an oversized glove-fitting triggerguard. The windage adjustable two-leaf rear sight assembly has one standing and one folding sight, both with platinum center lines and traditionally regulated for 200 and 300 yards, with a small ribbed blade front sight. Breech plug is case colored and is inlaid with platinum bands; barrel has a browned retainer and pipes accommodating a brass-tipped rosewood ramrod with an ebony handle. The light toned walnut halfstock has an old urethane re-varnish with flat diamond checkering, heavy steel buttplate, and single compartment patchbox with an engraved lion herald on the polished cover; top tang has a vacant silver oval. Rifle is accompanied by a large assortment of period parts and accessories including a quantity of 385 grain belted lead balls in a felt bag, ''EXTRA QUALITY'' black leather covered W. Bartram flask with adjustable charger, tin of Sheffield XL percussion caps, partitioned black leather ammunition pouch, ball starters, an assortment of brass cleaning jags and wire brushes in a felt bag, two leather slings, and a wood jar holding a loose sling swivel; patchbox compartment contains a small bag of patches. The rifle and accoutrements are housed in a fitted purple baize lined varnished mahogany campaign-style case with sliding brass catches and key lock. Condition appears nearly untouched as stored for many years with the mainspring remaining strong. Hammer, lockplate and patchbox finish have lightened to a mottled silver-gray patina; lockplate has a few light pry marks on the top edge with an associated wood fill in stock. Exposed barrel brown has areas of blackened oxidation; visible portion of bore has light corrosion and oxidation. Stock has scattered dings and scratches with a few small repairs. Case has overall scuffs and scratches with a shrinkage crack end-to-end through the center brass handle; no key is present. Wood jar is missing its handle and the ball compartment cover is a later addition. Est.: $2,500-$5,000. (Antique)
