Model 1831 French Artillery short sword, circa 1833, Gladius Roman style brass grip with roundels to quillon, double edge 19" blade engraved "Chatellerault 1833" on the ricasso, the reverse is marked "Pihet Freres". The Pihet brothers were private contractors who cast the hilt and assembled the sword using the blade made by the Chatellerault. leather scabbard with brass locket and chape. The number "114" is matched on the crossguard, & the scabbard throat. Many of these swords were imported to the U.S. during the Civil War, mainly used by Confederate forces. Overall very good condition, blade has some wear with very minor scattered pitting, scabbard is excellent, intact. Rare to find in this condition.
