GOOD HENRY ATKIN SIDELOCK EJECTOR SINGLE TRIGGER
GAME GUN WITH ORIGINAL CASE & SOME ACCESSORIES. Cal. 12 Ga. 2 3/4". S# 1628. The first Henry Atkin worked for James Purdey when he started his business in 1814. This man's son, also Henry, apprenticed at Purdey's; he left and founded his own business in 1875. His guns have a stellar reputation for quality. This gun has 30" dovetailed bbls. engraved "Henry Atkin (from Purdey's) 2 Jermyn Street. Haymarket. London." on slightly raised game rib set with two white beads. Rear portion of the rib is scroll-engraved & gold-inlaid with the number "3", which also appears on the top lever & forend tip. Bbl. flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 1 1/8 oz of shot & London reproofs for 2 3/4" chambers. Bottoms of bbls. are stamped with serial numbers and the maker's initials, "SH". Case-hardened sidelock action is stocked to the fences and features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold) and a single nonselective trigger that appears to be original. Beads are well filed. Action & lockplates are lightly engraved with near-full coverage and varying-sized open & shaded scroll. "Henry Atkin" is in scroll-accented device on each lockplate. Bottom of the action is engraved "Henry Atkin" and "From Purdey's". Blued trigger guard & top lever are also scroll-engraved. Serial number and "3" are in semi-relief on trigger guard tang. Very attractive, finely marbled, & lightly fiddle-figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 1/4" over checkered wood butt and features classic drop points, point pattern grip checkering, & gold oval engraved "NEJ". Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .732", L .731". Restriction: R .003" (IC), L .021" (MOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .022", L .020". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/4+". DAC: 1 1/2+". LOP: 14 1/4". CAST: approx. 5/8" off. WEIGHT: 6 lb. 10 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in its original oak & leather case with brass corners & circular central medallion. Interior is lined in scarlet cloth and has a Henry Atkin 2 Jermyn St. label on the lid. Case contains a 2-piece brass and ebony cleaning rod with a short handle & long lower portion, a pair of unmarked early snapcaps, square oil bottle marked "Made in England", and a rosewood-handled turnscrew. Open compartment contains a can of cleaning fluid, a pull-through cleaning kit, & external straps. Covered compartment holds brushes, jag, & a turk's head. CONDITION: very good, essentially as found. Bbls. retaining about 90% of an older reblack, most likely done at time of reproof. Action retains about 20% of the original case-hardening color. Lockplates retain about half of their color, with the strongest on the right plate. Color shows fading & silvering from normal hand wear. Top lever & trigger guard appear to have been reblued quite a while ago, now presenting silver highlights on normal areas of wear. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original oil finish, with quite a few marks & knocks. Sharp edges around locks are somewhat rounded. Checkering appears to be rerun or cleaned. Bores are bright & shiny, with a hint of light frosting toward breach ends and no visible repairs or problems. Action is tight. Bbls. are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Trigger appears to work well. Outer leather of the case has been renewed. Replaced handle appears to be good. Interior cloth is fair to good, considerably soiled with rubs, compressions, & some cuts. Case straps show some deterioration. Label is good. Accessories are good. (22-2250/MGM). CURIO. $10,000-13,500.
