GOOD JAPANESE MATCHLOCK CHU-ZUTZU (MID CALIBER).

Cal. 70. NSN. These larger caliber guns were made to take heavy charges to enable them to pierce body armor. This good specimen has 27 1/2" very heavy (1.9" at breech) ovate barrel with flared muzzle. Two block type sights are installed. Barrel is silver inlaid with flowers, clouds and fighting ravens as stylized warriors; one wielding a samurai sword. Breech section has brass flash guard and pivoting pan cover. Brass lock and trigger assembly are unadorned. Stock of evergreen type oak has heavy fore part for resting on loop hole or palm when supported on ones chest. Grip and trigger are on the rear of butt portion which has considerable taper. Seven Japanese characters are stamped on left side. Translation might prove interesting. CONDITION: very good. Barrel is dark brown patina with overall light pitting. Brass once cleaned has toned to gold. Stocks exhibit most of their original finish but show considerable wear. There is a recoil crack on upper left side of butt behind mounting ring. Bore is dark. Lock operable, however main spring is weak and trigger pivot is sticky.
