WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES. Cal. 13 bore. S# 11880 (CA 1840). The 30" twist barrels are engraved "John Manton & Son Dover Street London" on slightly raised wide game rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with London proofs and "J.M.". Breeches, with vented platinum blow outs, have some scroll engraving on sides as well as on rib extension. Breech iron is engraved with near full coverage well cut scroll and a sleeping bunny. Front spring locks with round bodied serpentine hammers are engraved with more matching scroll and game birds. Each plate is engraved "John Manton & Son, Patent". Trigger plate has fancy pineapple type finial, trigger guard is engraved with pointing pointer on bow, game birds and S# on tang. Stock of attractive fiddle figured and well marbled European walnut measures 14 1/2" over steel buttplate with long top tang engraved with spaniel chasing a pheasant. Stock has point pattern checkering at grip and forend. A vacant silver oval is at top of grip. Stock attaches to barrels with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (worm under tail) mounts through two plain pipes and pineapple thimble. MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: 1 3/4". DAC: 1 7/16". CAST: neutral. LOP: 14 1/2". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 6 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in what appears to be its original quilt figured mahogany case with dual hook and key lock closure. A circular "D" ring handle is on lid. Case is lined in green cloth and has John Manton label is in top as used after 1840. Bottom compartment fits gun perfectly and contains a good array of correct vintage accessories including spare ramrod, copper bodied powder flask by Sykes, unmarked leather shot flask, two piece brass and cocobolo cleaning rod, brass and ebony powder measure, ebony handled nipple wrench, and small turn screw stamped "D. Oyly". A removable compartment with sliding cover at right contains a bag of wads, mop, jags, Turks head and spare main springs. A circular wad in bottom is inscribed with what appears to be this guns S#. CONDITION: good. Barrels retaining most of their original brown with good definition to pattern. Other metal parts retain traces of their original finish but are mostly gray-brown. Stock retains most of its varnish finish with a large number of small marks and dings. Bores are shiny, lightly frosted throughout. Locks are fine. Exterior of case is very fine retaining what appears to be most of its original varnish finish. Interior cloth is very good to fine with some rubs and soiling. Label is lightly foxed and soiled. Accessories are generally good. (01-21930/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,500.
