GOOD PAIR OF STAUDENMAYER FLINTLOCK CAVALRY

PISTOLS IN CASE. Cal. 65 (pr). S# 1384 (on bottoms of barrels). Samuel Henry Staudenmayer was apprenticed to John Manton and started his own business in 1799. He had a very good reputation and did a lot of work with air rifles. He died in 1825. These pistols have 8" tapered round barrels with Nock form at rear and patent breeches. Tops are engraved "Staudenmayer London". Bottoms of barrels are stamped with S#, crowned initials "FP" along with another crown. Barrels are fitted with bridled steel ramrods and platinum touch holes. Breech irons with integral rear sights are deeply engraved with flowers and scroll. Locks with chamfered plates having square tails are fitted with high breasted serpentine cocks, waterproof pans, bridled frizzens and roller feather springs without finials. Back sliding safetys engage at half cock. Locks have foliate engraving on tails, partial feather bursts in front of cocks and "Staudenmayer" "London" at centers. Cocks have scroll matching breech irons. European walnut stocks with bag grips extend to within an inch of muzzles and attach to barrels with single captive sidebolts without escutcheons. Trigger guards engraved with arms on bows, have pineapple finials. Steel thimbles have cut at center to form integral front pipes. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistols are housed in what appears to be their original mahogany case with key lock closure which has flush mounted rectangular brass medallion on top with folding handle. Interior is lined in dark green velvet. Wear patterns of bottom compartment fit pistols exactly. Case contains brass and rosewood loading rod with ebony head, horn bottle containing two balls, ebony handled turnscrew, nutcracker type ball mould stamped "16". Two covered compartments with mahogany tops having bone knobs contain patches and balls. CONDITION: good. Barrels retaining most of an old reblack over considerable pitting on top rear of both pistols. Locks retain a goodly amount of what appears to be their original dark case hardening color. Trigger guards have traces of blue where protected. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish with a plethora of minor small marks and case wear. Bores are dark and rusted. Locks are fine. One cock is a well done replacement. Case retains most of its original finish with many marks and scratches overall and a small repair at front left. Interior cloth is good, with fading, stains and rubs. Accessories do not appear to be original, but are good. Lock is stuck in closed position, but case will close. (01-23017/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
