GOOD QUALITY DROPPING BLOCK ZIMMERSTUTZEN WITH
FINE ENGRAVING AND ORIGINAL SIGHTS. Cal. 4mm RF. NSN. These rifles were made for indoor target shooting and were quite popular in the late 19th and early 20th Century. The breech loading design similar to this rifle consisted of about 8" of rifled barrel which opens into a long large caliber tube which acts as a silencer to minimize the already quiet report of this small bore cartridge. The 4mm round only used the priming charge as a propellant. These rifles are generally quite accurate and some, like this example, are of very high quality. This rifle has 26 3/4" octagon barrel with milled in dovetail top flat for open sights. Top of this flat is silver inlaid "Emil V. Nordheim Mehlis". There are silver bands around breech ends and barrel is fitted with sling loop. Dropping block action is of the type illustrated on pages 49-52 of "Alte Scheibenwaffen Volume 3" as compiled by Tom Rowe. Firing mechanism with double set triggers is cut away at top and barrel nestles into place and is retained by a transverse pin. Action is nicely engraved with classic large open shaded acanthus surrounding portrait of German male shooter on left and woman on right. Triggers are double set and trigger guard is looped and spurred in Schutzen style. Rifle is equipped with its original Diopter rear tang sight and blade front adjustable for windage. Stocks are of usual Schutzen style with well formed right hand cheekpiece, thumb rest and hooked butt. Grip is nicely checkered. CONDITION: fine. Barrel retaining most of its original blue with some scattered pitting toward rear which shows cleaning. Action retains most of its original case hardening color. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish. Bore appears to be very fine with distinct rifling, needs cleaning. Mechanically good, trigger will not set, probably needs adjustment. These rifles are a lot of fun to shoot. Ammo is available through some importers. (23-4729/MGM). CURIO. $1,200-2,000.
