PISTOL BY WILLIAM TURVEY OF LONDON. Cal. 60. NSN. Bbl. 5 1/4". William Turvey was apprenticed to his father Edward in 1703 & worked on his own between 1711-1741. This pistol has 5 1/4" turn off cannon bbl. Breech section w/ integral half boxlock flint mechanism stamped w/ London gun maker’s proofs & “WT” under a fleur-de-lis. Top of breech section engraved “W. TURVEY”. Portion under feather spring “LONDON”. Lock features serpentine cock, integral pan, bridled frizzen & long feather spring that wraps under pan, separate top tang & iron trigger guard have foliate finials. Figured European walnut stock w/ raised moldings around back of lock, sideplate & top tang are silver mounted w/ grotesque face on butt cap, acanthus relief sideplate, grip escutcheon w/ remnants of old noble crest in central oval. CONDITION: metal parts old gray brown patina. Trigger guard w/ some light pitting. Wood w/ old worn surface w/ a number of marks. Silver well maintained w/ relief accentuated by darkened background. Pitted bore, mechanically fine. A very attractive, complete, early pistol. (01-19862/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
