GOOD U.S. SPRINGFIELD 1892 KRAG SECOND TYPE BOLT

ACTION RIFLE WITH 1894 DATED BAYONET. Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 11274. The 30" bbl. with uncrowned muzzle is fitted with correct type stepped rear sight and handguard which does not go over receiver ring. Action is marked “1894”, “U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY” and with serial number. Bolt is unaltered with flat extractor and no provision for takedown. Action does not have notch. Safety is of early style retained by a pin and housing has turned rings at rear. Early style stock with flat butt has buttplate without trap. Toe of butt does not show any alteration. Removal of buttplate reveals original type stock without any holes. Front band is of correct style with bump and hole for cleaning rod (steel cleaning rod present). Sharp inspector’s mark “JSA 1895” is on left side. A circled “P” is on grip. Bayonet with 11 5/8" U.S. marked blued blade is stamped “1894” on left side. Metal scabbard has symmetrical opening. Riveted on belt loop is present. CONDITION: very good, bbl. retaining traces of original blue has mostly faded to brown overall. Action shows cleaning to silver gray highlights with traces of blue remaining on extractor. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish with a good scattering of light marks. Bore is fine, shiny with some light frosting. Mechanically good. Bayonet retains most of its bright blue on blade which shows scabbard wear and sharpening. Wood of grip is good. Mounts are rusted and brown. Scabbard shows considerable overall pitting. A very rare Krag. (01-21835/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-7,000.
