GRIFFIN & HOWE CUSTOM RIFLE IN .375 H&H MAGNUM
If you are looking for a good “tool” for a one-gun safari or a brown bear trip to Alaska, this may be it.
G&H Serial number is 2739, and Mr. Chapman of G&H wrote that he remembers the build from 1987.
This bespoke rifle was built for an Alaska hunt, but evidently has spent most of its life in a safe, having been fired very little. It is in outstanding shape, with many of the custom Griffin & Howe “bells and whistles” that typically run up the build cost into the low-five figures.
G&H metal work on this rifle is terrific. It is built on the “stainless steel” Remington Model 700 action, but with custom 3-position safety lever, checkered Model 70 style bolt release, inside the trigger guard magazine floorplate release, barrel mounted front sling stud, G&H ramp front sight with their heavy hood, and a 24” steel barrel marked at the breech end “CAL. .375 H & H,” and on top “No. 2739 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC. NEW YORK, N.Y.” The number on the Model 700 Receiver is B6500982.
The barrel has an integral quarter rib featuring engraving and three open rear sights: a 50 yard standing, and 100 and 200 yard folding leaf sights, all with gold filled sight lines. The famous G&H quick-detachable scope mounts and rings match the receiver and rib, and hold a Leupold “silver” 3X to 9X Compact VARI-X scope. The bolt knob features 6-panel checkering and engraving. There is a custom trigger.
The stock, with 13 7/8” LOP, is a perfectly fitted black KNIGHT synthetic with contrasting red hard rubber butt pad. This kind of stock is practically indestructible, and can withstand days riding in the gun rack of the hunting car.
Overall, this custom 375 shows only very minor wear on metal and stock, and the bolt face shows that it has been fired relatively little. The rifling is crisp and strong.
