.500 Nitro caliber, 26" barrels, S/N 7038. Length of pull 15.5" to rubber recoil pad, drop at heel   Blued finish with case hardened frame and grip cap, blued triggerguard. Fine diamond-point checkered English walnut stock with splinter forend en suite fitted with lever-style release.  Blade front sight with folding leaf express rear sight and cross-hatch matting. Frame engraved throughout with English scrolls and rosettes on screw heads, grip cap engraved en suite.  Barrels show "THOMAS TURNER" with "60 QUEEN VICTORIA STREET, LONDON" address, with matching "THOMAS TURNER" on frame above action release.  Underside of barrels show British proofs including "[crown]/BP" black powder proof.  Water table shows additional proof with "ANSON & DEELEY's" patent marking. The whole in a modern Browning case with ten rounds of .500 nitro cartridges loaded with 43 gr. 4198 powder with oly stuffing and 350 grain bullets. Thomas Turner was born in 1807 and is recorded as working as a barrel maker in 1834.  Several years later he is listed as a barrel and pistol maker on 8 Fisher Street, London.  An inventor and gunsmith, he secured least eight patents. The 60 Queen Victoria Street address implies that this piece was retailed through W.J. Jeffery & Co., which is listed at that address, and Turner was known to make barrels for that firm. This places the date of this particular piece ca. 1890. **Very good condition overall. Piece has been refinished in the European manner with some resultant softening of engravings, though they remain attractive in their execution. Some dents from disassembly frame catch bar. Excellent definition remaining to checkering with a minor split rear of left side of frame around stock bolt. Stock shows only minor handling marks and blemishes. Bores are good with strong rifling. An excellent piece for a big game hunter or collector of English sporting guns.** $7,000-$12,000
