H.E. Dimick Percussion Halfstock Plains Rifle, NVSN, approx. .52 cal., 36.5'' heavy octagonal barrel with two platinum bands at breech. Made circa mid-19th century. Marked on top barrel flat ''H.E. Dimick & Co. St. Louis, Mo'' flanked by inward-pointing arrows, plain unmarked lockplate, double set triggers, iron triggerguard with scrolled tang, brass crescent buttplate, two oval brass barrel wedge escutcheons, two German silver thimbles retaining hardwood ramrod, and pewter nose cap. Brass dovetailed front sight with low blade over remnant of original German silver blade sight; iron buckhorn style dovetailed rear sight. Varnished walnut stock with checkering at wrist, initials ''HM'' (or ''WH'') carved into right buttstock; ''JW'' carved into left side stock at breech. During the Civil War, Dimick became nationally famous for providing the rifles for the elite sharpshooters of the 66th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Condition is very good+, with a smooth bluish-brown patina to iron parts. Stock is solid and smooth showing only minor wear and marks. A stout rifle built especially for rugged duty on the Western American frontier, made additionally desirable by the famed Dimick name. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique) (Joe Poyer collection)
