HALL MODEL 1840 FISHTAIL CARBINE WITH RIFLED BORE.

Cal. 52. NSN. The Hall rifle & carbine was very successful, it was however in it's original form very difficult to operate. The number of solutions were tried over the years & the Model 1840 percussion carbine was made in 2 different styles. One w/ an "L" shaped operating lever & the other (Type II) w/ the so called fishtail lever. A total 6,001 carbines of this style were produced. This example has usual 21" rifled rnd. bbl. (some Type I carbines are known w/ rifled bores), side bar for saddle ring & absence of storage compartment behind triggerguard tang. The percussion breechblock has "US" & "S. NORTH" markings. Inspectors initials "JCB" are on right side of bbl. shank. Walnut stock & iron mounted. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts retain traces of brown finish under considerable dark brown patina & light pitting. Markings on breechblock mostly obscured. Stock retains most of an old oil refinish over scattered marks & dings. There is a 2 1/2" crack on right side of action area. Fair to good bore w/ light pitting & a sm. ring about 12" from muzzle. Mechanically good although breechblock sometimes sticks. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20457/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
