HEAVY BBL. TARGET KENTUCKY RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO
JOHN DERR OF BERKS COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA. Cal. 62. NSN. Heavy (1 1/4" across flats) oct. bbl., likely made by William Pannebecker of Mohnton area, Berks County, measures 39" & is fitted w/ v-notch rear & brass bead front sights. Trade flintlock by Tryon features serpentine cock & bridled roller frizzen (feather spring w/ bulbous finial). Lock & cock are line border engraved & have foliate sprays. Central portion of plate is marked "TRYON" "WARRENTED". Brass mounted full length unfigured maple stock has Berks style Roman nose comb & dbl. fluted right hand cheek piece. Right side of stock is fitted w/ brass patchbox w/ hidden catch under tab of short stock return. The outline of this patchbox matches exactly to those found on other rifles known to be made by Derr. There is an upside down moon brass inlay on cheek piece. Side plate is nicely shaped. Forend cap & balance point plate are also in brass. There is incised line carving along ramrod channel & toeline of stock. Old, possibly original, hickory ramrod is held by 2 beaded octagonal pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: good as partially refurbished. Bbl. nearly all brown to dark brown patina which matches lock. Lock is in original flint, but has had interface of pan to bbl. welded up to improve seal in this area to make this rifle serviceable. Touch hole also appears to be rebushed some time ago. Bore is fine, shiny sharp rifling w/ a few scattered pits. An attractive big rifle that probably shoots as good as it looks. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19032/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,500-4,500.
