HIGH GRADE SMALL GAUGE DRILLING BY THE THREE

BARREL GUN CO. OF WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA. Cal. 16 Ga., 2 1/2" / 32-40. S# 1346. The 28" bbls. have slightly raised full length matted rib fitted with unique elevation adjustable rear sight which folds flat into rib and white bead front sight. Tops of bbls. are engraved "THE THREE-BARREL GUN COMPANY" and "WHEELING W. VA". Bbl. flats are stamped with serial number. Boxlock type action built on Hollenbeck's patent features automatic safety, square crossbolt fastener and double triggers. Rifle bbl. is cocked by a thumb lever in front of trigger guard and fired by front trigger. Action is engraved with about 30% coverage large simple scroll which offsets game scenes on sides. A bear standing under a dead tree with mountains in background is on left and a buck runs into an open meadow on right. Trigger guard is engraved with scene of flying duck. Serial number is on tang. Capped pistol grip buttstock of stump and fiddle figured lightly marbled American walnut measures 14" over checkered hard rubber buttplate. Sidepanels are checkered and point pattern checkering at grip has shaped flourishes toward comb. Matching splinter forend with distinctive finger grooves on sides has Deeley type release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: R .666", L .664". Restriction: R .017" (MOD), L .017" (MOD). Min. Wall Thickness: R .026", L .030". STOCK: DAH: 2 1/2". DAC: 1 5/8". LOP: 14". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 7 lb. 4 oz. CONDITION: fair to good. Bbls. retaining nearly all of an older reblue. Action retains about 40% original case hardening color which is considerably faded and silvered. Stocks retain most of an old oil refinish over one or two heavy marks. Buttstock shows many repairs at head and associated rerunning of checkering, which is haphazard. Otherwise checkering is dark and somewhat worn. Action has also been glass bedded in association with noted repairs. Bores are fine with light frosting in right bbl. and a fairly sharp dent in left about 6" from breech end. Rifle bore shows considerable wear and is frosted throughout. Action is tight. Trigger needs to be held forward before rifle can be cocked. Shotgun bbl. can be fired almost simultaneously (needs attention). High grade examples of this fairly scarce American gun are seldom seen, especially in 16 ga. (22-5423/MGM). CURIO. $1,200-1,500.
